None of the feathers sold on this site were obtained by plucking from the bird, dead or alive.  They give their feathers freely during molting. 

I harvest daily when the molting is in progress and heat treat to sterilize and prevent the transfer of insects.  The picking up of thousands of feathers I consider exercise and the birds keep me company.  Sorting and cleaning are work.

The proceeds from the sale of the feathers goes to the feeding of various animals and birds at the Northwest Renaissance Festival site.

Eye Feathers

The eye feather is the most recognizable the peacock feathers.  These feathers vary in color due to the breed of peacock from white to dark green.  The iridescent eye has many colors which makes this beautiful feather useful in decor or as craft material.  I have dark green and gold green feathers in my muster (flock). 

Eye feather sizes range from 6 inches to 6 foot in length.  The one shown at the left is 12 inches in length.

Guard Feathers or Butterfly Feathers

The guard feathers are strong feathers that are longer than the eye feathers and protect the train of eyes from damage.  These are the longest of the peacocks feathers and make impressive arrangements.  I also use them to make decorative trees for the holidays.  Pointed downward they become the branches.

In the pictures at the left; I placed the arrangement next to a door so there was a visual as to length of the guard feathers.  The picture of the back side of the displayed tail shows the true tail feathers as well as the guard feathers.  Guard feathers are seen at the outermost edge of the display (best seen in enlarged picture).

Wing Feathers

Peacock wing feathers come in various colors and shapes.  Without going into bird anatomy let me explain it this way; The striped feathers are on top of the black feathers which are on top of the gold feathers. The shapes vary by type with occasional transition feathers between.

The gold feathers are the primary flight feathers and the strongest feathers on the bird.  When I make fans, I use a Dremel to drill holes in these because they are to hard to put a needle through.  There are usually only 16 gold wing feathers on a peacock.

The striped wing feathers are usually showing some kind of wear on their tips but are easily trimmed and shaped.  They have been referred to as "Legal Eagles" because they can be used in place of wild bird feathers that are illegal to own.

Peahens have the same wing configuration as peacocks but the color of their feathers is gray-brown. Their feathers appear softer and I have made beautiful fans using only peahen feathers.

True Tail Feathers

The tail feathers support the train of eye feathers and are up to 2 feet long.  The peacock has silver-gray tail feathers.  The peahen has black tail feathers with some  white tips or markings.  These feathers lay flat and are almost as strong as the wing feathers.  They make great fan bases for large fans.

Miscellaneous Feathers

The variety of colors and shapes in peafowl feathers is amazing. 

Sword feathers - have the thickest areas of color; may or may not have eyes; same lengths as eye feathers.

Blue shoulder feathers - deep dark blue-black with iridescence; usually about 3-4 inches long.

Small green feathers - from the peacock's back have the colors of the eye feathers and sometimes even a small eye shape in them.

Small blue neck and breast feathers - make up for size in their striking colors: make beautiful jewelry and masks.

Down feathers - vary from pure white to a dark gray; usually about 5 inches long; may be tinged with a darker color.  Model makers use these for smoke.

Iridescent hurls - used for tying flies but also great craft accents. Approximately 5 inches long (some may be up to 8 inches long).
